Soy Candles – What Are They?

Soy wax is made from soybean oil by hydrogenation — a process that turns the liquid oil into a stable, creamy wax suitable for candles. Unlike paraffin, a by-product of refining crude oil, soy wax is entirely plant-based, biodegradable and renewable.

Compared with paraffin, soy wax burns more slowly and evenly, without soot and without the strong smell of burnt petroleum. Compared with palm wax, soy production isn’t linked to clearing tropical forests, which makes it the more sustainable choice too.

Wooden or cotton wick?

Cotton wicks are more common and burn quietly and predictably. The wooden wick we use in some of our candles burns with a soft, steady crackle, like a fireplace in miniature — it adds sound to the light and scent without being loud or intrusive.

How we pour every candle by hand

  1. Step 1

    Heating

The soy wax is melted to exactly the right temperature — no hotter than needed, so it keeps its qualities.

  2. Step 2

    Adding the scent

The fragrance oil is added by hand, in the right ratio to the wax, while the temperature is still right.

  3. Step 3

    Pouring

The wax is poured in small batches, and the wick is centred before pouring so it burns straight and evenly.

  4. Step 4

    Setting and curing

The candle is left to set and cure for about 48 hours before it is checked and packed.

How to care for your candle

  • The first time you light it, let the candle burn for at least 2 hours so the wax melts evenly to the edges.
  • Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each new burn.
  • Burn the candle on a flat, non-flammable surface, away from draughts and anything flammable.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
